Most PADI diving courses contain four components:

  • Independent Study: Students watch a videotape/DVD, read a text book and complete homework.
  • Classroom: Classroom sessions generally range from two to four hours in length. In some instances a quiz and/or final exam are required.
  • Pool: Most courses require time in the pool to learn and perfect dive skills.
  • Training Dives: Students are required to complete a specified number of dives, with an instructor and at a lake, quarry or ocean, to demonstration mastery of necessary skills. No more than three training dives may be completed in a day. Upon completion of the training dives, the certifying dive instructor will award the student with a Certification Card.
